🐓Jaffna Kings decimate the Galle Marvels in the grand finale of the 2024 Lanka Premier League by nine wickets and 26 balls in hand. An unbridled 185-run stand between Rilee Rossouw and Kusal Mendis eclipsed Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s blitzkrieg as Jaffna won their fourth silverware in five seasons.

Eyeing for their fourth LPL title, the Jaffna Kings’ decision to field first after winning the coin-flip panned well as Jason Behrendorff struck early with the new ball, removing the opposition openers by the fourth over. Tim Seifert and Janith Liyange played through the rest of the 21-run powerplay before Asitha Fernando concluded the latter’s stay. Right after, Bhanuka Rajapaksa joined hands with Seifert and built a 62-run stand with the Kiwi smacking three sixes and a four against Vijaykanth Viyaskanth in the 12th over. A score that read 48/3 in ten overs, scurried to 116/4 in the next five overs with Bhanuka Rajapaksa in the driver’s seat. The southpaw’s brutal assault in the next couple of overs helped them yield 42 off the power blast. However, a couple of economical overs followed with Asitha concluding Rajapaksa’s 34-ball 82 in the 19th over. Subsequently, a no-ball and a free-hit six steered the Marvels to a formidable 184/6 in 20 overs.

In reply, Jaffna lost a wicket on the first ball of the innings after Pathum Nissanka fell for a golden duck. Unfettered by the early dismissal, Rilee Rossouw and Kusal Mendis took a measured approach to steer Galle to a 63-run powerplay. The left and right-handed pair added 47 runs together in the next four overs with Mendis racing to a 24-ball fifty. There was no stopping the carnage as the duo peppered 54 runs in the next three overs to steer Jaffna to 164/1 in 13 overs. With 21 needed from the last seven overs, a couple of economical overs followed but it was too late for the Marvels. Subsequently, the Proteas knit his second ton of the competition in 50 balls, propelling Jaffna to a comprehensive win and earning their fourth title in five seasons.
