Opting to bowl first didn't work well for Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya as Sunrisers Hyderabad openers Mayank Agarwal and Travis Head were off to a flying start cruising their batting to 45/0 in four overs. However, Hardik gave his side the first breakthrough by scalping Mayank in the fifth over. But that didn't stop Sunrisers’ run carnage as Head looked brilliant, scoring his half-century in just 18 deliveries and taking SRH to their highest ever run tally in the powerplay with the scorecard at 81/1. Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma joined the party alongside Head, and the hosts reached 102/1 in just seven overs. The visitors finally breathed a sigh of relief as Gerald Coetzee dismissed Head who was batting with a strike rate of 258. But Mumbai’s woes persisted as Abhishek unleashed a 16-ball fifty taking the Hyderabad brigade to a mammoth 148/2 in just 10 overs. With the batter departing in the 11th over, Heinrich Klaasen came in and immediately started scoring at a brisk 23-ball fifty and cruising his side to 243/3 in 18 overs. With some brilliant batting from Markram and Klaasen, the Sunrisers posted the biggest total in IPL history as they finished their innings at 277/3 in 20 overs.
Chasing the gigantic total, Mumbai openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan were off to a great start from the first over. The duo took the Mumbai batting to 50/0 in three overs. Unfortunately, they couldn't capitalise further as Shahbaz Ahmed scalped Ishan’s wicket in the fourth over with Rohit departin▨g in the next over bowled by Pat Cummins. With Tilak Verma and Naman Dhir on the crease, the visitor's scorecard read 76/2 at the end of the powerplay. The duo built a stable 35-run stand and took their side to 100/2 in the eighth over. As the duo was slowly paving the way for Mumbai, Jaydev Unadkat broke the partnership, scalping Naman’s wicket in the 11th over. Continuing Mumbai’s run chase, Hardik Pandya and Verma took their side to 182/3 in 14 overs with the southpaw scoring a brilliant 24-balls fifty. With 96 runs needed in the last six overಞs, all eyes were on the Pandya-Verma duo to chase the total. Unfortunately, Tilak’s powerful batting ceased as Cummins dismissed Verma in the 15th over. Meanwhile, Pandya and Tim David forged a quick 42 runs stand taking their side to 210/4 in 17 overs. But some clinical bowling from the Sunrisers in the slog overs worked well as Jaydev Unadkat dismissed Pandya in the 18th over. With 54 needed off the last two overs, the Mumbai dugout prayed for a divine intervention. But as Pat Cummins conceded just seven runs in the 19th over, the game was all but over needing 47 runs in the last over. Ultimately, Mumbai Indians could manage only 246/5 in their allotted 20 overs as Sunrisers won the contest by 31 runs.
